Mission Statement
God has called Custer Road United Methodist Church into being to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Custer Road UMC seeks to fulfill its calling by helping any and all people grow in their experience and commitment to Jesus Christ through providing opportunities for worship, nurture, fellowship and service.

The Custer Road UMC Story
Organizers were relieved and pleasantly surprised when 246 people braved ice and snow February 10, 1980, to attend the first service of Custer Road United Methodist Church, held at Thomas Elementary School, in Plano, Texas. Later in 1980, as our membership grew, we moved to Carpenter Middle School and finally, on March 27, 1983, we celebrated our first worship service at our present location on Custer Road.

In spite of early adjustments to building on a natural spring (the beginning of Spring Creek), we have continued to grow and expand our facilities during six different phases — with our beautiful sanctuary completed on May 27, 1990, our chapel on June 1, 1993 and our Upper Room, Christian Day School, and additional office and classroom space dedicated on February 11, 2001. Most recently, our sanctuary underwent a major renovation which included the addition of a 97-rank Schantz pipe organ, during our Sing to the Lord campaign. The 17 acres we purchased on the southeast corner of Legacy and Custer Road (our north campus) currently serves as a remote parking lot on Sundays and provides us with additional room to grow our ministries.

In the 27 years since that first service, at which 29 families joined, Custer Road UMC has become a congregation of over 7,000. We have grown from one worship service to three Sunday morning services, at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m., which offer the opportunity to worship God in a more traditional service known for its broad variety of music. On Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m., we offer contemporary Youth Worship in the Upper Room.

A church that loves children, Custer Road UMC has always included children in worship and in 2004 completed major renovations of the elementary Sunday School wing which now houses Journey—an interactive, exciting program of hands-on learning for children in kindergarten through 5th grade.

Adult Sunday School has always played a large role at Custer Road UMC. Our first adult class began only three weeks after our first worship service with 119 adults participating. Today over 1,000 adults are involved each Sunday, one of the reasons our large congregation experiences that “small church” feeling. Single adults formed one of those first Sunday School classes and our Single Adult program continues to meet needs throughout our area.

Community outreach has long been an important aspect of Custer Road UMC’s ministry. Early monetary support and personal involvement in both a local women’s shelter and homeless family shelter were only the beginnings of our extensive missions outreach programs, which currently include over 25 different local and global mission projects.

And the story continues ... come join us this Sunday and be part of the excitement! Something wonderful and inspiring is always happening at Custer Road United Methodist Church.
