Disciple IV"Under the Tree of Life" - the word "under" in the title conveys invitation, welcome, shelter, security, and rest -- home at last. Emphasis on the Psalms as Israel's hymn book and prayer book leads naturally to an emphasis on worship in the study. Present through the entire study is the sense of living toward completion -- toward the climax of the message and the promise, extravagantly pictured in the Revelation.

God is most honored through your living, active, death-defying, out-of-the-box faith. The second book is Faith, Hope, and Luck. Our faith in God often hinges on his activity, or inactivity, in our daily experiences, but it doesn't have to be that way. It's not supposed to be that way.

Letters of Paul - II Corinthians (SAM-sponsored)
Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m.-noon, beginning Sept. 15
Sometimes we forget that we belong to Jesus. It's not intentional, but it happens. The church in Corinth had forgotten. They were divisive. Insensitive. Argumentative. Rebellious. Paul knew the Corinthian church needed a reminder, so he wrote a heartfelt letter defending his character, ministry and message. Paul's letter encourages us to look at our own lives so we won't forget what really matters.

Remembering Your StoryTuesdays, 6-8 p.m., beginning Sept. 7
Now that the kids have moved out, it's a good time to remember and reclaim stories that help us understand our unique journeys through life. This class, open to all but directed especially at those who are 50 and older, recognizes that everyone has a story. We'll bring supper, discuss how to remember our stories, and focus on the personal and spiritual aspects of things that have happened to us. As we do fun, easy writing exercises each week and at home, the emphasis is on capturing our stories both for our personal growth and for sharing with others, rather than writing "correctly" or "perfectly." We'll explore creating a personal blog, writing for publication or public speaking, and other ways to preserve and/or share our stories. Class fee includes the book, Remembering Your Story, by Richard L. Morgan.

About Discipleship Academy
A Bible study program of Custer Road United Methodist Church, Discipleship Academy provides opportunities for adults of all ages, stages and interests, members and visitors alike, to learn and share in a small group setting. If you are a new believer, have a desire to grow deeper in your walk with God, or consider yourself a scholar of his Word, Custer Road Discipleship Academy is for you. A “disciple” of Christ believes in and follows him. We are called to be his disciples; to hold on to his teachings and put him first in all we do. In John 5:15 Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Faith is defined by believing and trusting in Christ and his teachings, and our faith grows by studying God’s word. Discipleship Academy stands on the knowledge that such study is vital for us to be effective Christians in our daily lives. This is made evident by Romans 10:17, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.”
Discipleship Academy courses are offered during the daytime and evening throughout the week to accommodate even the busiest of schedules. Short- (six week) and long-term (30-34 week) classes are offered during both fall and spring seasons. A mix of classes is offered during the summer months as well. Some curricula require daily reading and preparation for weekly discussion, while others call for light reading and preparation.
This fall, long-term courses consist of the Disciple series (I-IV) and Christian Believer, which meet for over 30 weeks to dig deep into scripture throughout the Bible.
Short-term courses focus on specific books of the Bible, such as Psalms and Isaiah, as well as on particular issues and relationships. Classes focus on subjects such as our Christian beliefs, faith, prayer, marriage, parenting, men’s ministry, books and movies and financial issues. Courses are written by well-known authors like Marjorie Thompson, Priscilla Shirer, Beth Moore, Bill Hybels, and Jennifer Kennedy-Dean, just to name a few.
Some Discipleship Academy courses are free and others require a small cost to cover course workbooks and materials. Scholarships are available. Monetary considerations should never hinder anyone from studying God’s Word in a small group.
Child care is provided for some studies with a minimum of four days advance reservation.
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
