The forecast was dreary but the day was bright for the Esperanza 5K and Family Fun 1 mile. Almost 300 people registered for the 10th Annual event and 184 people braved the weather threat and finished the 5K to receive their hand-painted finishers medal. Over 50 people completed the Family Fun 1 mile to collect Easter eggs and a finisher’s medal before the threatening rain began.
The Esperanza committee is thankful for Custer Road United Methodist Church’s support and their generosity to allow the post-race festivities to take place in the bright spacious commons area. Participants and families enjoyed face painting and games hosted by Esperanza sponsor Speech and Occupational Therapy of North Texas, playing on the slides, breakfast burritos made by United Methodist Men and the Esperanza 5K awards ceremony. Trophies and gift cards donated by Dallas Running Company were awarded to first place finishers Noah Perez and Cindy Hallo and to first place masters finishers Danny Monistere and Sonya Rodriguez.
A beautiful T-Shirt quilt, which included shirts from each of the 10 years of Esperanza, was presented to Ellen Curnes of Juntos Servimos to deliver to Larry and Dr. Nancy. Members of Custer Road who quilt together lovingly made this commemorative quilt.
One of the brightest spots of the day was presenting Ellen Curnes of Juntos Servimos with a check for over $52,000. Dr. Nancy and Larry will continue to care for our neighbors in need along the border in Mexico, using these proceeds from the race.
