Christmas Joy in Peru 2018 – Seeing God Reaching Others
Submitted by Kim Carter
This was my seventh time to participate in Buckner International’s Christmas Joy in Peru trip on December 1st through December 8th. Fifteen Americans worked with the Buckner Peru staff and translators during this week. We visited three communities of extreme poverty that Buckner Peru is working in and six orphanages in Lima and Cusco. We were blessed to deliver over 1,000 Christmas gifts to precious children.
It is such a joy to give these children the Christmas gifts CRUMC and other churches have provided! Thank you for your generosity! We also play with the children, rotating them through four stations: Craft, Christmas Story from Luke, Bible memory verse and Recreation. This year I was fortunate to work in the Christmas Story group. We did a puppet show sharing the Christmas story of Jesus’ birth and then had the kids do the Christmas story with puppets. The kids loved learning about Jesus’ birth through puppets. One place really touched my heart – Ancon, is a government run facility for young men with severe special needs that usually don’t participate or pay a lot of attention to our activities. They sat quietly and watched the puppet show and then actually performed it themselves! We could see God at work in their hearts.
At the Lima community center, Villa Hermosa, we spent one day helping two families finish their bathrooms and also painting the inside of the recently completed third story of Buckner’s community center building. The new space will allow Buckner Peru to expand their outreach efforts in this area, reaching more families and children with social services.
I’m looking forward to next year’s trip, God willing, and am always happy to share about past trips if you are interested in going – it is a life changing experience sharing God’s love with the children of Peru. Watch for our annual Christmas Joy in Peru backpack distribution this April/May at CRUMC – your gifts put smiles on lots of faces!
