On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 1 Corinthians 16:2
When I read this verse I am taken back to my childhood and our family room desk. Every week either mom or dad would fill the church envelope (remember those?) with their weekly gift and leave it on the desk. I couldn’t wait until Sunday so I could help put that envelope in the collection plate. When I joined the church and received my own box of envelopes I felt like I had arrived.
To me the weekly gift was and is an act of worship as we are reminded to set aside from our blessings so that others may benefit. It helped us focus on what we give and why.
My how times have changed in how we give. Electronic giving and credit cards make it so easy. No more envelopes with your unique number.
As your family prayerfully considers your operational gift for 2018 I hope you will take to heart the idea of setting something aside weekly, saving it up. After all, it is easier if we take one step at time in our giving versus getting behind and having to come up with a lump sum. Your gift will enable CRUMC to deliver our Mission Statement of “Helping people know the Love of Jesus”.
Dear Lord, make me mindful of the gifts you have provided and open my heart so that we are giving back. Amen!
