JUNE 6-AUGUST 10, MONDAY-FRIDAY
The 7th year of the Summer Lunch Program. Custer Road UMC partners with the Texas Department of Agriculture to distribute meals to children and their families each weekday throughout the summer. Last year we served over 10,000 lunches.
After 6 summers, the children who we serve are comfortable with the friendly faces of Custer Road and know that we are truly there to help. The Summer Lunch program is about more than feeding the community, it’s about outreach. There are many families who attend worship at Custer Road UMC, children who attend VBS, and several more youth that have joined our Revelation Youth Choir and our Youth Group. As we continue to serve our community, it will become more common to see many more of these neighbors around our church.
Each person who attended, both volunteers and recipients of the lunches, has their own story of how the program has affected them. I know I am truly moved and excited to get out there and serve children lunches each day because when I pull up to the park with the CRUMC trailer, there are smiling faces waiting on the curb! There is a true sense of community at the park.Jon Graf, former SLP Coordinator
Both volunteers and recipients leave the Summer Lunch Program with their own story of how the program has positively affected them. The children that receive lunches have really taken ownership of their lunch program and want to help the volunteers take the items out of the trailer and get everything set up. The children know how to set things up and they are sure to let new volunteers know what they are supposed to be doing. There is a true sense of community at the park, even when it is 100 plus degrees in July and August. Not only are the children looking for food, but they are also looking for their daily routine and someone to interact with them. This is what the Custer Road UMC Summer Lunch Program is all about.
How Can You Help?…
We can’t make the Summer Lunch program such a huge success without your help, prayers, and gifts. Monetary donations cover the cost of the adults’ lunches, as well as the weekend food bags (which are assembled by youth), and various supplies needed all summer long. We need 500+ people to serve this summer (helping with set-up/clean-up, handing out lunches, playing with the children and providing fellowship with the parents).
While serving lunch is a major part of what we do, one of the biggest blessings is meeting our neighbors and keeping all the kids entertained! Whether you want to help daily, or can only serve one day in your schedule, we’d like to have you as part of the Summer Lunch team. Each shift at the park is from 11:30am – 1:30pm each weekday. Sign up below! All volunteers 18+ years of age must have a current Custer Road UMC background check and have completed Ministry Safe Training.
