“Fly Girls: How Five Daring Women Defied All Odds and Made Aviation History” by Keith O’ Brien
In the 1930s, no sport was more popular, or more dangerous, than airplane racing. Male pilots were lauded as heroes, but the few women who flew were usually ridiculed. Fly Girls tells about five women who broke through the prejudice: Florence Klingensmith, a high school dropout; Ruth Elder, an Alabama divorcée; the most famous, Amelia Earhart; socialite Ruth Nichols; and Louise Thaden, a young mother from Kansas.
