Thank you to everyone who served & contributed to the SLP program. We could not do it without you! Thank you to our SLP Coordinator, Elizabeth Greer, our Assistant SLP Coordinator, Jenai Butler, and Cristen Graf for Grant Administration.
This is the 10th year of the Summer Lunch Program. Each summer, Custer Road UMC partners with the Texas Department of Agriculture to distribute meals to children and their families each weekday throughout the summer. Last year we served over 5,500 lunches, and work to return to 10,000+ this year.
Over the past nine summers, we have formed great relationships with the children and families who we serve and they know we are truly there to help. Our Summer Lunch program is about more than feeding the community, it’s about outreach. There are many families who attend worship at Custer Road UMC, children who attend VBS, and several more youth that have joined our Revelation Youth Choir and our Youth Group. As we continue to serve our community, it will become more common to see many more of these neighbors around our church.
"I make it a priority to make friends at the park. There are a lot of families that don't want hand outs and they wonder if they need to sign a voucher. I try my best not to make it "a thing". I want them to feel welcome and to know that I am their friend. I know 150-200 by their first name and that is important to each person...they are important to me!"
How Can you help?
Help Serve Lunches at Big Lake Park:
We need volunteers to meet us at Big Lake Park weekdays June 1-August 6 to set-up, help distribute lunches, clean-up, and takedown.
When Can You serve?:
Whether you want to help daily, or can only serve one day in your schedule, we’d like to have you as part of the Summer Lunch team. Each shift is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. All volunteers 18+ years of age must have a current CRUMC background check and have completed Ministry Safe Training. Learn more about background checks and our Ministry Safe program here.
Others Ways to Serve in the Summer Lunch Program:
Make Monetary Donations to the Summer Lunch Program
Monetary donations are being accepted to help with the Summer Lunch Program. You may either make a donation online now or by writing a check (indicate SLP in the memo to ensure it goes to the Summer Lunch Program) and drop off your donation at Custer Road UMC. Thank you for your generosity.
share table food donations
With your help, we can provide nutritional food items families can use to prepare a meal over the weekend. Fresh fruit and vegetables are very much appreciated and taken quickly every Friday! Please bring items to the bin in the Mission Donation Area. Monetary donations will be used to purchase fresh produce each week. Kids and families can select what they will enjoy from our Share Table each Friday to better prepare them for the weekend!
Create Weekend Bags for our Summer Lunch Participants
Help us extend our support to the Summer Lunch families through the weekends. The kids love Fridays when we hand out snack bags! See the list below to learn how to build a snack bag!
