The Summer Lunch Program Begins on June 1 and continues through August 7.
This is the 8th year of the Summer Lunch Program. Each summer, Custer Road UMC partners with the Texas Department of Agriculture to distribute meals to children and their families each weekday throughout the summer. Last year we served over 9,000 lunches.
Over the past seven summers, we have formed great relationships with the children and families who we serve and they know we are truly there to help. Our Summer Lunch program is about more than feeding the community, it’s about outreach. There are many families who attend worship at Custer Road UMC, children who attend VBS, and several more youth that have joined our Revelation Youth Choir and our Youth Group. As we continue to serve our community, it will become more common to see many more of these neighbors around our church.
"Each person who attended, both volunteers and recipients of the lunches, has their own story of how the program has affected them. I know I am truly moved and excited to get out there and serve children lunches each day because when I pull up to the park with the Custer Road UMC trailer, there are smiling faces waiting on the curb! There is a true sense of community at the park."
How Can you help?
Help Serve Lunches at Blue Ridge Park:
We need volunteers to meet us at Blue Ridge Park daily June 1-August 7 to help distribute lunches.
The program will be very different this year. Due to physical distancing, lunches will be grab and go. As safety is of paramount concern to us, volunteers will be required to wear masks and gloves and lunches will be placed in vehicle trunks to provide limited physical contact. In the past we have been able to provide food, fellowship and build relationships. We can accomplish the food part this year, and the fellowship/relationships part will be through the car windows and if people walk up to get their meals.
When Can You serve?:
Whether you want to help daily, or can only serve one day in your schedule, we’d like to have you as part of the Summer Lunch team. Each shift is from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Monday-Friday. All volunteers 18+ years of age must have a current CRUMC background check and have completed Ministry Safe Training. Learn more about background checks and our Ministry Safe program here.
